The at-home grooming tool kit
You do not need a salon setup. Seven essentials cover almost every dog and cat. Add the extras only if your pet's coat calls for them.
What to buy first
Marked essential or nice to have, with the coats each tool suits.
Slicker brush
EssentialFine bent wire pins that lift loose hair and small tangles. Use light pressure so the pins never scrape skin.
Metal comb (wide and fine teeth)
EssentialThe tool that tells you if a coat is truly tangle free. If the comb glides from skin to tip, you are done.
Nail clippers or grinder
EssentialScissor or guillotine clippers for quick trims, or a low speed grinder for smooth, rounded edges.
Styptic powder
EssentialStops bleeding fast if you nick the quick. Keep it open and within reach before you start any nail trim.
Pet shampoo
EssentialChoose a formula made for the species. Human shampoo is the wrong pH, and many dog products are unsafe for cats.
Pet toothbrush and enzymatic toothpaste
EssentialFinger brush or soft angled brush plus pet toothpaste. Never human toothpaste, which can contain xylitol and fluoride.
Ear cleaning solution
EssentialA vet approved cleanser and cotton pads or gauze. No cotton swabs inside the ear canal.
Undercoat rake or deshedding tool
Nice to havePulls loose undercoat from double coated breeds during shedding season. Not for single coated or curly breeds.
Bristle or rubber curry brush
Nice to haveGreat for short smooth coats. Removes dust and loose hair and spreads natural oils for shine.
High velocity or pet dryer
Nice to haveDries thick coats quickly and blows out undercoat. Always use a low heat or cool setting.
Mat splitter
Nice to haveSafely breaks up mats so you can comb them out. Much safer than scissors near the skin.
Lick mat and high value treats
Nice to haveSpread with a little wet food or pet safe spread to keep your pet happy and still during nails and baths.
Two things people forget
- Styptic powder.
- Buy it before your first nail trim, not after. If you nick the quick, a pinch pressed on the nail stops the bleeding in under a minute.
- A toothbrush.
- Dental disease is one of the most common problems vets see. A finger brush and pet toothpaste cost very little and take two minutes a day.
